Final Day of the Canal Zone
Today marks 40 years since the final day of the Canal Zone, September 30, 1979. Below are photographs from the flag-lowering ceremony at the Administration Building, as well as envelope covers indicating the Canal Zone Post Office’s last day of operation.
What was your experience on September 30, 1979?

This was indeed a sad day for America and Zonians. What is extra sad now looking at this photo, who are the men folding the flag? I would think that there should have been U.S. soldiers doing this job. What an insult to the end of our American/Zonian heritage.

Hi Bill,
Our records for this photo read, “A Panama Canal Guard and his helpers are taking the United States flag down.”

Yeah I think so, I´m a Zonian almost the last generation, I´m 31 years old and I attended Balboa Elementary School, Fort Clayton Elementary School, and Curundu Elementary school, I found this website and I love to see Zonian posting here, I feel at home…

15 years before the one explained on this post, some events where the spark of the conclusion of the Panama Canal Zone (were the heritage of gold/silver roll was still influencing by that time). Any toughts of the link between that events and the Final day of the Canal Zone?
