Object of the Day

Picnic Scene

The object’s record indicates that this photograph was taken around 1910.

2000.029.122

It looks like some people in this photograph may be wearing bathing suits (such as they were at the time) which indicates that water might be nearby.  Do you have any ideas as to where this photo may have been taken?

The image is so small that you can’t really study it. The past photos posted would blow up and allow close viewing for study.

I recall a church picnic at Summit Gardens near Balboa. The church was the Balboa Union Church which served all Protestant denominations. Picnics usually happened in the dry season. Summit Gardens looked over the canal.

I think you might mean Morgan’s Gardens and not Summit Gardens. Morgan’s Gardens was close to Balboa (between Los Rios/Corozal and Fort Clayton) and overlooked the canal. Summit Gardens was close to Gamboa and did not overlook the canal.

Definately in bathing suits. Maybe Taboga. It was a popular spot for outings, camps and picnics, and still is today. Have seen lots of old photos like this at Taboga. That looks like a huge table-cloth for the picnic.

THE FELLOW IN THE FAR BACKGROUND WITH THE BOW TIE LOOKS LIKE GERALD D. BLISS, POSTMASTER, CRISTOBAL POST OFFICE.
