This is a searchlight from the coast artillery locted at Fort randolph… so it is Atlantic Side. the other vehivle has a listening device…. whenoperational it would be like big earphones pointing up to the sky to detect from the transferred sound of approachiong aircraft. D Btry refers to Battery D of the unit assigned to duty at Fort randolp whcih was the Armypost adjacent to the US Navy facility at Coco Solo. The buildings in the background look to me like Colon too…. the Carnaval parades in panama City have different buildings in the background. These mobile searchlights were also envisio0ned to have a role in defending against closer-in enemy warshiops, and woukld have been deployed in a position to support the big guns there….. but the combination of listening device with them certainly does indicate that by 1936 they were assming an ever-more air defense role. This is a very nice ohoto indeed. There are several books out there that talk to the military equipment from this period…. one is by Charkles Small titled “Military railroads in the Canal Zione or something like that. The big gun have their own book published around 1990
