Behind the Scenes Video

We get questions from time to time about our behind-the-scenes activities, everything from storage to scanning, so two of our Panama Canal Museum Collection graduate students created this video to show a typical workday for them. The video was produced in March 2026 by Caroline Davis and Azariah Rodriguez of the University of Florida Museum Studies Program. Caroline and Azariah have been working for the PCMC since mid-Fall 2025 on projects relating to Balboa High School and the annual Ocean-to-Ocean Cayuco Race at the Panama Canal. Their Interns Gone Wild! video shows some of our PCMC storage areas in the Smathers Library Building, as well as views of the students scanning photos, browsing past PCMC Blog posts created by them, and searching the collection. Enjoy!

Really nice video showing the expertise and dedication these “Interns Gone Wild” have for the Panama Canal Museum Collection. There is so much work going on behind the scenes and videos like this help us gain an understanding and appreciation for how much they care for maintaining and preserving the collection.

Once again, a first class job with everything UF does to preserve, study and publish information from the museum collection/s. The West Indian article is really good showing the maps of Jamaica. I bet I could pinpoint an address or two that is scribed on the old money orders I have from the Canal Construction Days. I have quite a few money orders that West Indians sent money home with. I will have to get them out and look through them. I wish I had known about the women in the cayuco race article. My wife would have fit in the article as being 7 months pregnant and paddling the whole race. Great job as always.

Well said, Joe! It is marvelous that so many folks not previously associated with the Canal Zone have taken such an interest in preserving this heritage!

Many thanks to those who work to preserve our collective legacy as Zonians. I lived in Cardenas Village from 1975-1980. My Dad was in the FAA there. Though it was only a 5 year span, those five years were incredibly consequential. I can’t imagine a better place to grow up, particularly as a young teenager who spent most waking hours there swimming, diving, fishing and exploring the jungle – was a truly magical place to spend those 5 years of my life. Diving at Porto Bello and the submarine pitts at Coco Solo. FIshing and swimming at the Causeway and Taboga Island and going to school at Los Rios Elementary, Ft. Clayton Elementary, Curundu Junior High and Balboa High School. Great memories – thankful for those working to preserve them!
