    Updates and Introductions: Lauren O’Neill

Greetings! My name is Lauren O’Neill and I have been working with the Panama Canal Museum Collection since August 2017. My first foray into the collections was helping to create a digital exhibition on Scouting in the Panama Canal Zone, which you can view here: http://exhibits.uflib.ufl.edu/scouting/. This semester, I am processing the photographs and re- categorizing them by subject. I truly enjoy looking at every moment captured through the lens of Zonians and visitors to the Panama Canal Zone. I have learned quite a bit and can’t wait to continue this educational journey through the Panama Canal Museum Collection.

    Panama Canal Zone Test Kitchen

The team of PCMC interns tested their cooking skills with recipes from a cookbook loaned to us by Edna Ridgby. Stuffed yucca, fried plantains, sweet plantains, and arroz con piña were all on the menu. The test kitchen helped the interns learn about cuisine in the Panama Canal Zone, and they made a video to get everyone excited for the new exhibit in the Albert H. Nahmad Panama Canal Gallery, Served in the Zone which opened on March 3, 2018. See the video by following this link: http://ufdc.ufl.edu/AA00062327/00001

Camping in the Jungle Online Exhibit

One of the PCMC interns, Lauren O’Neill, created an online exhibit based on a past physical exhibit titled Camping in the Jungle: Scouting Stories from the Panama Canal Zone. This exhibit delves into how scouting in the Panama Canal Zone was both similar to and different from the scouting experience in the United States mainland. Camping in the Jungle was made possible by contributions from PCMC members who shared their experiences and objects with us. We hope that this online version of the exhibit will be useful and enjoyable to all. See the exhibit here: http://exhibits.uflib.ufl.edu/scouting/.   Camping in the Jungle: Scouting Stories from the Panama Canal Zone was curated by Sarah Marek with assistance…

From the Stacks: Sophia Loren visits the Panama Canal in 1980

As we continue to re-process the collections, we continually come across fascinating objects and images. Check out these photographs we found commemorating Sophia Loren’s visit to the Panama Canal in 1980! The Italian actress earned several major awards throughout her career, including an Academy Award for Best Actress. While we don’t know the nature of her visit, we know that the Panama Canal was a frequent publicity stop for a multitude of public figures and celebrities. At the 2018 Panama Canal Society Reunion, we’ll be focusing on Popular Culture in the Panama Canal Zone! Make sure to attend this exciting event at Orlando World Center Marriott on June 27 –…
